Dear Reader,
As a gravely concerned U.S. citizen, on May 9th I sent this strongly worded open letter to House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi concerning Congress' endless funding of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan:
Dear Nancy,
It was historic and exciting to see you become Speaker of the House. You offered great potential for change as you and a Democratic majority swept into office with a mandate to end the Iraq war and bring the U.S. soldiers home safely to their families.
But you failed us and the public now rates Congress lower than President Bush, despite his having some of the worst ratings of ANY U.S. President ever.
You blame President Bush for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but you could have cut off funding for those wars at any time, as Congress did in 1973 to end the Vietnam war. Instead you have given President Bush every dollar he's demanded and each time you do, you send soldiers and civilians to their deaths, while many more lose arms and legs and children lose their parents. In Iraq and Afghanistan, children also lose their lives.
And for what? If you have an answer to that question, please look into the eyes of the families who have lost their loved ones in these wars and explain it to them.
Nancy, no-one who fails as badly as you are attains greatness no matter how good their intentions. But it's not too late for you. If you intend to serve the American people well, you must ask yourself who you really are, and what it is you stand for.
And when you've done that, please publish an open letter and tell us so we can have confidence in you. Convince us that from now on, you will help lift the U.S. government up from the mismanaged morass and endless war machine it has become before it bankrupts the American people spiritually and financially.
Sincerely,
Dick Kazan
