Only yesterday the U.S. headlines screamed "Economic Meltdown," "$750 Billion Bailout," "Credit Crisis," "Real Estate Collapse" and other terrible news.
But in election times this dirt gets swept under the carpet. It now appears we no longer have these problems. The economy is not in an economic meltdown, it is in a "slump" or a "slowdown," the massive bailout has become a "rescue" or a "government investment."
U.S. banks by the thousands are lining up for this "government investment." Only yesterday, it would have been called "Socialism" for the government to "invest" in the banks and monopoly size mortgage providers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as mega-giant insurance company AIG.
Unfortunately, it still is called "Socialism" for the government to provide healthcare for all of its citizens. So 47 million men, women and children will do without and tens of millions more will be under-insured, just one medical emergency from financial catastrophe.
There's little talk for now of a credit crisis or a disastrous drop in real estate values and the widespread real estate foreclosure calamity appears to be getting resolved as the lenders have suddenly become kind hearted and forgiving and millions of troubled homeowners may now live happily ever after.
Wouldn't it be great if all these wonderful things were true. But in fact, we as a people are going to face the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. But as Americans did then we must come together to rescue ourselves, as no-one is going to give us a bailout.
Times will be hard. But eventually we will rise from the ashes of a war driven economy that drained our moral values along with our finances and from the staggering debt brought on by balance of payments short falls from buying imported goods on credit and from providing gigantic Wall Street bailouts.
We can then build an economy based on our productivity, one that is environmentally friendly and energy independent, instead of a military based economy and one dependent on the mass consumption of goods we can't afford.
If you think Americans will no longer come together to try to solve their problems, just look at the huge voter turnouts across the nation. From the harsh economic lessons to come Americans will demand more of their government and will create a better way of life for their children, and for the world's children.
