Making God In Man's Image

How often this thought occurs as wars are fought, with each side claiming to have God's support as His creations destroy one another in His name.

How often this thought occurs as sports teams compete with each other, both sides claiming God wants them to win, and after one side is victorious, man speaking for God in proclaiming this win a "miracle."

How often this thought occurs when any group of people claims to be "the chosen people" as God seemingly favors some of His creations over others. Closely related to this thinking is when a group of people living within certain borders announces "God bless (ourselves)"

But perhaps the image of God is none of these things.

The image of God may be people lovingly hugging one another. It may be people forgiving one another, it may be the birth of a child, or in the happiness of holding a puppy or a kitten. It may be the color and scent of a rose, the majesty of tree covered mountain tops or in a sunrise.

The image of God may be parents devoting themselves to the well-being of their children. It may be when people set aside their differences to help one another.

It may be a "miracle" is life itself.

The image of God may be love, joy and forgiveness. The image of God may be expressed in sharing rather than hoarding the magnificent bounty meant for all. It is may be in brotherhood and in our oneness with everyone we meet.

Apparently the image of God is our choice. We can define God's image by our self-centered actions or we can seek Him within our higher selves and strive to be worthy of that image.
