"You can't fight wars with tax breaks," is a quote from my friend and webmaster, Jon Barnes and he is right. With the U.S. economy stumbling and the wars and all their expenses raging, the discussion in Washington is not how to raise revenue or slash expenses but how to extend yet again the Bush Tax Cuts of 2001 and 2003.
Those tax cuts were respectfully titled:
Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA)
Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 (JGTRRA)
As you can see given the sorry state of the U.S. economy, those tax cuts never lived up to their titles, while as the U.S. government deficits mushroom, they will not live up to their titles. Those tax breaks exist because no one wants to pay taxes.
The U.S. has some tough decisions to make but ending its multitude of wars, its "Kill Squads," its drone attacks and massive production of weapons of massive destruction, fighter jets, tanks, ships and all of its other arms should be a "no brainer," to use the phrase our president repeatedly used about closing Guantanamo, but never closed it.
The choice is simple. End the wars and all of their spending, or end the tax breaks and hike taxes to begin paying for those wars, no longer putting them on the national credit card.
