"Winning the Peace in Iraq"

Dear Reader, The Wall Street Journal published an editorial by conservative writer Max Boot suggesting Iraq has gone well. I wrote a brief rebuttal the Journal did not publish, nor did they publish any other rebuttals. The Boot Editorial is shown below and my brief letter is published here:

Re: "Winning the Peace in Iraq," Max Boot, WSJ, 8/20/10
"Americans can take pride in how Iraq has developed," says Mr. Boot. Really?

To date millions of Iraqi men, women and children have been killed or wounded. Iraq is in ruins, its economy shattered with unemployment twice the level of the U.S. Great Depression, electricity for just four hours a day, meaning little or no air conditioning in 110 degree temperatures, little refrigeration, television or lighting and clean water and sewage treatment are scarce as the electric generators and pumps are often down.

Over two million Iraqis have fled their nation including doctors, nurses, professors, school teachers and other educated people who provide vital services. Medical supplies are scarce and often trade in the black market which means children, ill from filthy drinking water and disease receive little care, and many of them die.

The situation is so bad and the anger so high, that you and I as Americans would not be safe on the streets of Baghdad, Mosul, Basra or Fallujah without a security detail along side of us. Even the U.S. military ventures out in force, not individually.

Mr. Boot, if this is "Winning the Peace in Iraq," I wonder how you would define Hell.
